The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the imminent crisis facing Gaza’s health services due to severe fuel shortages.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that only 90,000 liters of fuel entered Gaza recently, far below the 80,000 liters needed daily by the health sector alone.
This shortage has forced WHO and its partners to prioritize fuel distribution to critical hospitals like Nasser Medical Complex, Al-Amal Hospital, Kuwaiti Field Hospital, and 21 Palestine Red Crescent Society ambulances to prevent services from collapsing.
The European Gaza Hospital has been out of service since early July, intensifying the impact of the fuel crisis on healthcare in the region.
Hostilities in Rafah have blocked access to the main fuel storage facility, further complicating efforts to replenish dwindling supplies via the Karem Shalom crossing, amidst security risks and logistical challenges.
The WHO has renewed its urgent appeal for the reopening of the Rafah crossing and continuous, unrestricted flow of fuel, food, water, and medical supplies into Gaza to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
