Cindy McCain, the director of the World Food Program, has reported severe famine conditions in parts of the Gaza Strip, describing the situation as a “full-blown famine” that is spreading across the area after nearly seven months of conflict.
During an interview with “Meet the Press,” which was aired on Friday, McCain highlighted that the famine, initially observed in northern Gaza, is now extending southward. The interviewer, Kristen Welker, underscored the gravity of McCain’s statements, prompting her to confirm her assertion. “You are saying there is full-blown famine in northern Gaza?” Welker asked. “Yes, I am,” McCain reaffirmed twice.
McCain’s comments follow those of Samantha Power, director of the U.S. Agency for International Development, who last month was the first American official to declare famine conditions in Gaza during a congressional testimony. However, it is important to note that these statements by McCain do not represent an official declaration of famine, which involves a more complex bureaucratic process.
