The United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy have expressed concerns about the ongoing military movements in southwestern Libya, warning that these activities could lead to violent confrontations.
The five nations encouraged security forces in both eastern and western Libya to seize the opportunity to cooperate in implementing effective measures to secure borders and protect Libya’s sovereignty. In a statement, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its concern over the military movements across the country, particularly in the southern and western regions. The mission urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any provocative actions that could lead to uncontrollable situations and jeopardize the fragile stability and safety of citizens.
The mission also praised ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and called for continued communication and coordination between the Libyan National Army forces and the Government of National Unity. It expressed regret that these developments coincided with the 84th anniversary of the founding of the Libyan Army, reminding of the division within this vital institution.
The General Command’s land forces headquarters, led by Saddam Haftar, announced the deployment of military units to towns and regions in the southwest, stating that this move is part of a comprehensive plan to secure the southern borders and enhance national security. They emphasized that this move “targets no one,” while the General Staff and the Joint Operations Force in western Libya have raised their readiness level in response to these developments.
