In the last 24 hours, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces have conducted a self-defense operation, successfully destroying three Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) in the Red Sea.

The USVs were deemed an imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, as well as merchant vessels in the area. This action was taken to safeguard freedom of navigation and enhance the safety and security of international waters.

USCENTCOM emphasized that the Iranian-backed Houthis’ ongoing malign and reckless activities pose a significant threat to regional stability and endanger the lives of mariners in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are critical maritime routes for global trade, particularly for oil and gas shipments.

Over the past few years, these waters have witnessed increasing hostilities due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen.

The Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group, have been engaged in a prolonged war against the Yemeni government, which is supported by a Saudi-led coalition.

The conflict has spilt over into the maritime domain, with the Houthis frequently targeting vessels in the Red Sea using mines, missiles, and uncrewed surface vessels.

The U.S. and its allies have been actively working to counter these threats to ensure the safety of maritime traffic.

The destruction of the Houthi USVs by USCENTCOM is part of broader efforts to maintain the security of crucial international shipping lanes and to deter further destabilizing actions by the Houthis and their Iranian backers.
