US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin pledged unwavering US support for Ukraine despite funding hurdles and congressional delays in approving a $60 billion aid package. Austin’s remarks came during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of over 50 nations backing Kyiv.
Austin emphasized the US’s determination to equip Ukraine with the resources necessary to counter Russia’s aggression. He highlighted a recent $300 million aid package secured through Pentagon savings, underscoring the administration’s commitment.
However, Austin faces skepticism from European allies regarding the sustainability of US support. The delay in releasing the $60 billion aid package and the potential for further funding constraints raise concerns about America’s long-term commitment.
Meanwhile, the European Union is exploring ways to finance weapons purchases for Ukraine. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell proposed using 90% of frozen Russian assets’ proceeds to fund arms purchases through the European Peace Facility.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged swift congressional approval of the pending aid package. He warned of an impending Russian offensive in late May or summer, emphasizing the urgency of US support.
