The United States has reaffirmed its full support for Libyan-led solutions to unify the Libyan army and ensure the country’s sovereignty.

This statement was made in a tweet by the US Embassy in Libya on Friday, reiterating the US commitment to enhancing security cooperation with Libya.

The embassy emphasized working with professional Libyan military officers across all regions to build a stable and unified Libya for its people.

US AFRICOM Commander General Michael Langley and US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Charles Q. Brown Jr. met with the Libyan National Army’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Abdel Razek Al-Nadhouri, and the Government of National Unity’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Haddad.

The meeting took place during the 2024 African Chiefs of Defense Conference in Gaborone, Botswana.

The unification of the Libyan army is crucial for the stability and sovereignty of Libya, a nation that has faced prolonged conflict and political fragmentation since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.

The split between the Libyan National Army in the east and forces aligned with the Government of National Unity in the west has been a significant barrier to peace and stability.

The United States has consistently supported efforts to unify Libyan military forces, recognizing that a cohesive national army is essential for addressing security challenges, countering terrorism, and promoting national reconciliation.
