UNICEF has appealed for the international community to double its commitment to Sudan, currently experiencing the largest child displacement crisis in the world, and to fund the humanitarian response plan.
The organization reported that three million children in Sudan have fled widespread violence seeking safety, food, shelter, and healthcare, with hundreds of thousands taking refuge in sprawling temporary camps across neighboring countries.
Fourteen million children in Sudan desperately need life-saving aid, many living in constant fear and danger, UNICEF stressed. The organization urged conflicting parties to resolve the crisis affecting millions of children and families living under harsh conditions and expressed concern over the recent escalation of fighting in areas like Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan, accompanied by severe child rights violations.
UNICEF has received reports of 3,100 grave violations against children, including killings and maiming, and 19 million children being kept from schools, in addition to the spread of deadly diseases such as cholera, dengue fever, measles, and malaria. Notably, 7.4 million children lack access to safe drinking water.
