The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has initiated a global campaign titled “Hope Far from Home,” calling for a renewal of solidarity and firm commitments from nations to support the rights of individuals seeking refuge from war, violence, and persecution.
The commission highlighted in its statement that this campaign comes amidst record global levels of forced displacement, with the number of internally displaced and refugees worldwide reaching 110 million.
The statement also drew attention to the increasing threat to the very act of seeking asylum in many parts of the world due to increasingly stringent policies. This is further exacerbated by dwindling long-term resettlement solutions and choices.
Elizabeth Tan, the Director of International Protection at the UNHCR, stated, “People fleeing from war, violence, and persecution should be met with compassion and kindness, not barriers, restrictions, and discrimination, which have no place in today’s world.
They need safety and protection, and it is the international community’s responsibility to work together to find enduring solutions that enable them to live safely and with dignity.”
Under the banner of “Hope Far from Home,” the campaign aims to convert reinforced global solidarity into tangible actions and solutions through enhanced international cooperation, legal reforms, and policy adjustments.
Over the next three years, the UNHCR confirmed that it will work with partners and other stakeholders through this campaign to advocate for changes in laws and policies in five key areas.
The plight of refugees has become an escalating global concern over the past decades. Conflicts, persecutions, and socioeconomic instability have contributed to an increasing number of displaced individuals, pushing them to seek safety and better lives beyond their home countries.
The role of the UNHCR is crucial in this context, as they not only advocate for the rights of refugees but also provide direct aid, ensuring their well-being during turbulent times. This new campaign is a testament to the international community’s ongoing efforts to address this pressing issue, emphasizing the need for collective and robust action to support those most vulnerable.
