The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for an immediate, comprehensive, and independent investigation into the “Abu Salim Massacre” that occurred on Monday. In a statement, the UN mission urged security authorities in Tripoli to take necessary actions to prevent any incidents that could lead to further escalation and violence.
UNSMIL highlighted the warnings from the UN envoy, Abdullah Batelli, about the grave risks posed by the competition among security entities for the already fragile security situation in the capital, Tripoli.
The mission condemned the massacre that claimed at least 10 lives, affirming its close monitoring of the unfolding situation. Following the tragic event, the Tripoli Security Directorate announced that the Public Prosecutor’s Office had commenced its investigation into the Abu Salim massacre, which resulted in 10 fatalities.
Tripoli’s Security Director, Khalil Wahiba, reported that a call was received at the Abu Salim Police Station at 1:30 AM, reporting a killing incident involving ten individuals, some affiliated with the Stability Support Agency, by an unidentified armed group near Abu Sha’ala Mosque.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with the Criminal Investigation Department, immediately began their investigation, inspecting the crime scene for fingerprints, examining the house, and conducting a preliminary examination of the bodies, which were found with multiple gunshot wounds.
The bodies were then transferred to the Abu Salim Accident Hospital’s Mercy House for further forensic analysis to determine the time and mechanism of the incident, the weapon used, and to preserve the ammunition for weapons expertise evaluation.
The Stability Support Agency mourned the loss of two of its members, Mohamed Fathi Shneesh and Musab Al-Mukhtar Al-Dub, who were among those killed in the Abu Salim massacre.
