The United Nations Secretary-General‘s Special Representative in Libya, Abdullah Batili, urged Libyans to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards fulfilling the commitment to conduct elections.

This message was conveyed in Batili’s New Year greetings to the Libyan people, shared on the official Facebook page of the UN mission.

Batali emphasized the importance of putting the needs of the Libyan populace first, encouraging unity and constructive discussions to transform the electoral promise into reality.

He stressed the urgency of taking action to restore unity, build trust, and pave the way towards a more prosperous future for all Libyans.

“In this new year, I extend heartfelt wishes to all in Libya, hoping for enduring peace, unity, and prosperity in every Libyan heart. May 2024 be a year where the voice of the Libyan people is heard, their demands met, and their aspirations fulfilled,” Batali expressed.

On November 23, Batali issued invitations to key Libyan institutional parties for a forthcoming meeting aimed at resolving political disputes over the electoral process.

These institutional parties include the Presidential Council, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Council of State, the Government of National Unity, and the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar.

Libya currently faces a political struggle between a government appointed by the House of Representatives in early 2022 and the National Unity Government led by Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, who insists on only relinquishing power to a new government elected by the parliament
