UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning on Sunday, expressing deep concern about the deteriorating situation in Gaza and calling for an urgent ceasefire.
“The situation in Gaza is growing more desperate by the hour. I regret that instead of a critically needed humanitarian pause, supported by the international community, Israel has intensified its military operations,” Guterres said.
Speaking in Kathmandu, Nepal, Guterres lamented the rapid escalation of the crisis and criticized Israel for intensifying military operations instead of implementing a much-needed humanitarian pause.
Guterres decried the unacceptable number of civilian casualties, emphasizing that the world is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe.
He highlighted the dire conditions in Gaza, where over one million people are displaced and face severe shortages of essential resources due to relentless bombardment.
The UN chief called for immediate humanitarian action, emphasizing the necessity of a ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and the delivery of sustained relief to meet the basic needs of the people in Gaza.
