The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, in a recent report regarding the situation in Libya, noted that the political process has reached a critical juncture. He emphasized that it’s imperative for all parties to manifest their declared commitment to conducting elections.
Guterres acknowledged the efforts of the 6+6 committee, which is endeavoring to draft legislation that would facilitate both presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible. He pointed out that contentious issues remain in the draft laws, necessitating a political consensus among stakeholders.
The UN chief continued, “Our negotiator will intensify talks to rally key stakeholders towards achieving a comprehensive political agreement that ensures the successful execution of elections.” He added, “It is essential for involved parties to make necessary compromises to arrive at a feasible electoral framework and resolve all contentious matters.”
Guterres stressed the need for the Libyan people to reclaim control in order to resolve the crisis in Libya. Indicating that the United Nations, represented by its negotiator, will continue to collaborate with Libyan stakeholders to establish a sustainable path towards peace and stability.
He highlighted the importance of continued support from regional and other organizations, such as the African Union, European Union, and the Arab League, as well as concerned member states, to buttress the efforts of the United Nations.
Collective backing is indispensable to ensure a unified and coordinated approach to assist the Libyan people. Guterres stated, “The international community, including the UN Security Council, must speak with a single voice to demonstrate its support for the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people.”
Lastly, Guterres emphasized that the Libyan people have expressed a strong desire for free, credible, and democratic elections. “Now is the time for their leaders to listen,” he concluded.
