The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called on Monday for an international investigation into the Beirut port explosion that occurred on August 4, 2020.
Turk expressed his concerns over the apparent lack of accountability regarding the tragic incident.
Speaking before the United Nations Human Rights Council, Turk remarked, “Three years after the Beirut port explosion, no accountability has been established.”
He further noted that “It might be time to establish an international mission to ascertain the facts and examine human rights violations associated with this tragedy,” as reported by the news agency “France Press.”
The explosion, which devastated large parts of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, has been a focal point of international concern, with many demanding clarity on its causes and those responsible.
The Beirut port explosion of August 2020 resulted in the loss of over 200 lives and left thousands injured. It also led to widespread property damage and exacerbated Lebanon’s economic crisis.
The call for an international investigation by the UN underscores the global community’s growing impatience with the apparent lack of progress in local investigations and demands for justice and accountability.
