The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reported that approximately 70% of the victims in the Gaza Strip from the recent Israeli bombings are women and children.
In a post on its account on the platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter), the UNFPA for Arab States emphasized that Palestinian women and children deserve to live. The post further stated, “Palestinian women and children are not military targets,” and called for an immediate ceasefire.
This statement from the UN agency underscores the grave humanitarian implications of the conflict in Gaza, highlighting the disproportionate impact on non-combatant populations, particularly vulnerable groups like women and children.
Women and girls represent half of the population in Gaza and 11% of households are headed by females. This is likely to increase as the violence results in a growing number of widows, for whom the loss of livelihoods, housing, and land will have an even more significant impact.
