The United Nations said on Thursday that the war in Sudan has displaced more than 7.1 million people, making it the largest refugee crisis in the world.
Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric said that “the recent fighting in central Sudan has forced 300,000 people to flee.”
He added that “these new operations bring the number of displaced people to 7.1 million, including 1.5 million who have fled to neighboring countries.”
UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, also announced that more than 150,000 children have been displaced in the past few days from Jazeera state in Sudan, and that they have been cut off from urgent humanitarian assistance due to the escalation of violence there.
The World Food Programme (WFP) had earlier warned that more than half of Sudan’s population could be at risk of food shortages if the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has been going on since April, does not stop.
