Ukraine has officially received its eighth installment amounting to €1.5 billion as part of the European Union’s comprehensive financial assistance initiative for 2023. The Ukrainian Ministry of Finance, as reported by the “Ukrinform” news agency, disclosed that the nation’s state budget has already benefited from a sizable €13.5 billion in concessionary funds from the European Union this year alone.
Sergei Marchenko, Ukraine’s Finance Minister, emphasized the profound impact of the EU’s financial assistance, saying, “The total financial support provided by the European Union significantly contributes to ensuring financial stability and hastening our triumph in the war.”
He continued, expressing gratitude, “I am deeply thankful to my counterparts across all European Union institutions for their unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s cause and for consistently availing funds. Their support aids the Ukrainian government in punctually and fully financing state budgetary expenditures, especially focusing on social and humanitarian needs.”
According to the Ministry, if Ukraine adheres to the agreed structural policy conditions shared by both parties, it is anticipated that the subsequent three tranches will be dispensed by the end of 2023.
It’s worth noting that the overarching comprehensive financial assistance program prescribes a total funding amount of €18 billion.
Ukraine has been at the forefront of geopolitical tensions for years, particularly with its eastern neighbor, Russia. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and the subsequent conflict in Eastern Ukraine has significantly impacted the country’s economy and stability. In these challenging times, the European Union (EU) has emerged as a significant ally, offering both political backing and critical financial assistance.
