During a joint briefing with Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the two countries’ intentions to expedite the development of the vertical gas corridor project, aimed at enhancing the supply of liquefied natural gas to the region.
Shmyhal highlighted Bulgaria’s active role in Ukraine’s reconstruction, particularly in the energy sector, including renewable and nuclear energy. Ukraine is keen on learning from Bulgaria’s experience in transitioning away from Russian nuclear fuel and enhancing nuclear power plant safety.
Shmyhal stressed the importance of the vertical gas corridor project as a strategic initiative for increasing liquefied natural gas supplies to meet regional demands.
Additionally, Shmyhal mentioned that Ukraine and Bulgaria have agreed to explore the feasibility of connecting their power grids through Romania within the ENTSO-E framework, aiming to boost energy supply stability in Southern and Eastern Europe.
Plans for 2024 include convening the next session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and hosting a Ukrainian-Bulgarian business forum with the support of both countries’ Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
