The United Arab Emirates dispatched on Monday a plane carrying 50 tons of food supplies to the Federal Republic of Nigeria to alleviate the suffering of the population affected by the recent floods that have swept through many areas of the country.
UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Salem Al Shamsi, emphasized his country’s ongoing commitment to supporting and assisting brotherly and friendly nations in facing humanitarian challenges, as reported by the UAE news agency “WAM.”
Al Shamsi noted that this initiative aims to reduce the suffering of those affected by the floods in Nigeria and to provide the necessary support to help them through this difficult period. Over the past weeks, Nigeria has experienced a series of severe floods caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure and the displacement of thousands of citizens. The floods have affected several Nigerian states, including agricultural areas, leading to a loss of food sources and an increased need for urgent humanitarian aid.
The United Arab Emirates has been actively involved in providing aid to various African nations, significantly focusing on humanitarian and development assistance. Recently, the UAE allocated 70% of its $100 million pledge to the UN for humanitarian efforts in Sudan, reflecting its commitment to alleviating the crisis in the region.
addition, the UAE has announced an $85 million contribution to address the humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa, demonstrating its ongoing support for regions impacted by climate change and other crises.
Moreover, the UAE is expanding its role from just providing aid to enhancing trade relationships with African nations. For instance, the UAE’s investments in Ethiopia have been substantial, shifting towards economic partnerships that include significant investments in sectors like chemicals, food and beverages, and pharmaceuticals.
