In a recent statement before the UN Security Council, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reaffirmed its unwavering support for concerted efforts aimed at achieving a just and enduring peace in Ukraine. The UAE emphasized the crucial importance of preserving Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity while urging an end to the crisis to prevent further regional and global instability.

Ambassador Mohammed Abu Shehab, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE Mission to the United Nations, conveyed the UAE’s concerns over the recent escalation in Ukraine, citing one of the largest waves of airstrikes in almost two years, resulting in numerous casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. He underscored the imperative that civilians and civilian objects should not be targeted during conflicts, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts to spare civilians from military operations and to afford special protection to hospitals.

Abu Shehab acknowledged the challenges of peacemaking, stressing the necessity of serious and sustained efforts, concessions, and the high risks involved. He expressed deep concern about the lack of progress toward peace in Ukraine over the past two years and warned that the recent escalation could further impede the prospect of reaching a peaceful resolution.

Highlighting the global repercussions of the conflict, Abu Shehab emphasized that without a dedicated commitment to peace, the world could witness increased violence and chaos. He urged member states to intensify their efforts toward dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing that bold and courageous decisions prioritizing peace over escalation are essential.

The UAE ambassador concluded by expressing hope that 2024 would be a more peaceful year than 2023, emphasizing that achieving this goal requires proactive and decisive actions from the international community.
