The United Arab Emirates, a major contributor to humanitarian aid in Sudan and Africa, has allocated 70% of its $100 million pledge made in April at the International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan to UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the aid will be directed to key UN partners, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Programme, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Health Organization.
This ensures a comprehensive approach to addressing the humanitarian crisis and mitigating famine in Sudan.
The UAE’s approach includes providing various types of aid, especially food and health services, protection for women and children, and emergency shelter, demonstrating its commitment to addressing the multifaceted humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
Maryam bint Ibrahim Al Hashimi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized that the UAE’s aid reflects its leadership’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian support for the Sudanese people. The aid will be delivered to areas like Al-Fashir in cooperation with the World Food Programme.
Since the crisis began, the UAE has established an air bridge to Sudan and Chad, providing 130 million dollars in humanitarian aid and 9,500 tons of food and medical supplies through 148 relief flights, along with a ship carrying 1,000 tons of urgent relief supplies.
The UAE has also supported Sudanese refugee camps in Chad and sent 100 tons of food aid to South Sudanese refugees through the World Food Programme.
In addition, the UAE built two field hospitals in Am-Djarass and Abeche, Chad, serving all civilians regardless of nationality, age, gender, or political affiliation. The hospital in Am-Djarass has treated over 29,378 cases since its opening.
Al Hashimi reiterated the UAE’s call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the crisis through political means, urging collective efforts to end the conflict and enhance Sudan’s security and stability.
Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, expressed gratitude to the UAE for its generous $70 million donation, highlighting that this support will strengthen life-saving assistance for families and communities affected by the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
