Tunisian President Qais Saied met Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, who emphasized the strategic friendship ties between Italy and Tunisia.
The meeting was attended by Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Minister Francesco Luloprigida, and Labor Minister Marina Ilvera Calderoni, both accompanying Tajani on his visit to the Tunisian capital.
Following the discussion, Tajani posted on the (X) social media blog, highlighting the “cooperation based on our relationship with Tunisia in the context of the Mediterranean region,” and reiterated his government’s strong commitment to ensuring fair peace in the Middle East.
The two sides inked a memorandum of understanding to manage organized migration flows.
The memorandum, which Tayani signed with Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar, stipulates the establishment of new channels for regular immigration that will allow 4,000 qualified Tunisian workers to come and work in Italy, according to what the Italian AKI news agency reported.
For his part, Tayani stated before the signing, saying: “We want to provide job opportunities for people seeking work and who have been trained, and who will not move to Italy but will work directly in the agricultural and industrial sectors.”
Nabil Ammar, the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, held discussions with Robert Jenrick, the UK Minister of State for Immigration, regarding steps to combat illegal migration.
During his visit to London to participate in the second session of the Tunisian-UK Partnership Council, Ammar emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to addressing this issue within its capabilities while adhering to Tunisian laws and international treaties. He reiterated the government’s rejection of granting illegal migrants residence on its territory.
Last July, Tunisia signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding with the European Union to combat irregular migration and support the Tunisian economy, but it is still stalled due to disagreements regarding financial support.
