Tunisian authorities reported on Friday that various security sectors, while carrying out security tasks and raiding suspicious headquarters, arrested 11 extremists, including a woman.
The General Directorate of the Tunisian National Guard stated that on Friday, the first of March 2024, 11 extremists, including a woman who was wanted by judicial authorities, were arrested. The statement from the General Directorate of the Tunisian National Guard mentioned that various patrols from the anti-terrorism services and operational units across the National Guard regions in Gabes, Zaghouan, Gafsa, Mahdia, Bizerte, Monastir, and the capital Tunis participated in executing various security campaigns.
The statement noted that these campaigns succeeded in apprehending 11 extremist elements, including a female element reported to security and judicial authorities for belonging to a terrorist organization. According to the statement reported by the Tunisian newspaper Al-Shorouk on Friday, the detainees were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to eight years, and upon review by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the security authorities were authorized to take the necessary legal actions against the detainees.
According to Tunisian media, black flags of a terrorist organization, military attire, and documents calling for allegiance to extremist organizations were found in possession of the detainees, in addition to their dealings with extremist pamphlets. The statement mentioned that all the detainees, who were arrested, confessed to the crimes attributed to them. Video clips glorifying the terrorist organizations ISIS and Ansar al-Sharia, which are banned in Tunisia, were found in possession of the detainees.
The Tunisian authorities are investigating the defendants’ connection with the charge of attempting to facilitate the travel of individuals to regions witnessing the presence of terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria.
