Tunisia’s Interior Minister, Kamal Feki, announced that his country hosts 80,000 Sub-Saharan African migrants. The minister was quoted by Nesma TV channel stating that 17,000 of these migrants are located in the city of Sfax, confirming that 1,057 irregular African migrants voluntarily left Tunisia for their home countries.

The Tunisian Interior Minister added that his forces had prevented around 2,200 migrants from entering the country via border crossings during the first half of 2023. Earlier, Tawfik Shakri, a spokesperson for the Libyan Red Crescent, mentioned that the organization has been assisting migrants on the Tunisian-Libyan border since the early days.

In his conversation with Sputnik, he stated that the Red Crescent provided medical care, first aid, and food supplies, as well as facilitated communication with their families in different countries. He pointed out that the total number of irregular migrants on the Libyan-Tunisian border is about 600.

Shakri noted that the Red Crescent collaborates with all relevant international organizations in providing medical services and food aid with the assistance of local authorities, represented by the Libyan border guards.

In relation, a high-level delegation from the Italian Interior Ministry arrived last Thursday at Mitiga International Airport in Libya to participate in the joint Libyan-Italian working group meeting concerning security.
