Threads Supports “All Languages” in Latest Update

Threads, Instagram‘s rival to Twitter and X, is enhancing its global reach by extending its keyword search function to all regions where the app is accessible.

Initially trialed in English-speaking countries like Australia and New Zealand in August, it later expanded to include most English and Spanish-speaking countries, including the U.S., in September.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, now announces that the search feature will support all languages, making Threads more accessible to its nearly 100 million monthly users worldwide.

Reports are also emerging that Threads is close to launching in the EU, as suggested by The Wall Street Journal, which anticipates a launch next month.

This EU version might include a read-only mode, allowing users to view posts without signing up. With Threads available in over 100 countries, its expansion into the EU, where multiple languages are spoken, will enhance its utility.

The Threads team has been actively updating the app based on user feedback. Recent additions include a chronological feed, web apps, like viewing, polls, GIFs, hashtag support, an edit button, profile switching, and more.

There are also plans to introduce a developer API and integrate it with ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon and other networks.

Despite these updates, Threads has not yet included a key feature found in X: Trending Topics, though it’s reportedly in development. Threads seems to aim for a less immediate approach than X, often featuring older posts in its feed.

Mosseri has stated that the platform doesn’t intend to emphasize news content, contrasting with X’s focus on current events. However, the influx of former X users to Threads might influence its future direction.

Mosseri also mentioned upcoming enhancements to the search function. Currently, Threads blocks certain terms like “long COVID” in searches, redirecting users to the CDC’s website for information.
