An unprecedented intensification of clashes erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum early Wednesday.
The RSF intensified artillery attacks from their southern Khartoum bases targeting army positions in the General Command, Signal Corps, and Omdurman.
The continuous artillery bombardment caused panic among Khartoum residents who were awakened by loud explosions echoing across the capital.
In response, the Sudanese army launched heavy airstrikes this morning on RSF positions around the Armored Corps, Bahri, and the southern sports city area, accompanied by the sound of anti-aircraft defenses.
The army also targeted RSF sites in Khartoum and Bahri from their platforms in Karrari, Omdurman. Intense fighting, explosions, and artillery shelling have continued since Wednesday morning.
The U.S. State Department announced that Secretary Antony Blinken discussed with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, the urgent need to end the conflict in Sudan during a phone call on Tuesday evening.
The department added that Blinken and al-Burhan also discussed ways to ensure “unimpeded humanitarian aid access, including across borders and frontlines, to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.”
Blinken emphasized the resumption of peace negotiations and the necessity of protecting civilians and de-escalating hostilities in El Fasher, North Darfur.
Recent attacks around El Fasher have undermined a local ceasefire that had shielded the city from the broader national conflict.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that Egypt will host a conference next month, bringing together Sudanese civil political forces with regional and international parties.
