On Tuesday, several areas in northern Sudan experienced severe flooding, resulting in dozens of casualties and the destruction of over 10,000 homes. The floods severely impacted regions north of Dongola city and Abu Hamad in Nile River State, a key hub for the country’s gold mining activities.
According to the North Africa News Agency, the situation has raised significant environmental concerns. Floodwaters have mixed with waste from mining sites and carried debris into the Nile River, the primary source of drinking water and irrigation for agricultural projects.
Although official data on the extent of the damage has not yet been released, activists reported that at least 11 people have died and around 50 have been injured due to building collapses or drowning in the floodwaters.
