During the NATO leaders’ summit in Washington, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez delivered a speech in a closed-door session, emphasizing the importance of consistent international standards.
According to sources from Sanchez’s office, he highlighted the necessity of a coherent political stance that aligns with public perception.
“We cannot be accused of double standards that weaken our support for Ukraine. On the contrary, we demand the same unity and consistency against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for Gaza,” Sanchez said.
“It is crucial for our citizens to understand that we do not have double standards. If we support Ukraine because we defend international law, we must do the same in Gaza. If we demand respect for international law in Ukraine, we must demand the same respect in Gaza,” Spain’s PM stated.
In the same summit, NATO allies announced the beginning of the long-awaited transfer of F-16 jets to Ukraine.
President Joe Biden urged the 31 alliance leaders to match Russia’s heightened military production following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago.
“We can – and will – defend every inch of NATO territory, and we’ll do it together,” Biden affirmed to the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s principal decision-making body.
Ukraine continues to seek firm commitments for future NATO membership, which entails mutual defense agreements.
Negotiations have reportedly led to a statement endorsing Ukraine’s “irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.”
