Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Friday that Spain would supply Ukraine with missiles for the American Patriot air defense system from its stockpile.
Earlier, the Spanish newspaper “El País” revealed that Madrid had decided to provide Kyiv with Patriot missiles, but without the radar and missile launch platforms required for the Patriot surface-to-air system.
The Defense Ministry confirmed Robles’ statements during a video conference with the Ukrainian defense communication group. However, the ministry did not comment on Spain’s delivery of radar and launch platforms.
The newspaper clarified that Madrid would send “a small number” of missiles, each costing over a million dollars.
Robles also mentioned additional Spanish support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian invasion, including more Leopard combat tanks currently undergoing refurbishment. She added that the first batch might be ready for deployment by the end of June.
According to Robles, preparations are also underway to deliver machine guns, protected logistics vehicles, armored infantry vehicles, anti-tank weapons, and field howitzers.
Spain possesses three Patriot systems, with one stationed in Turkey since 2015 as part of NATO’s deployment to protect against missile attacks from Syria.
