Spain Pledges Unilateral Recognition of Palestinian State

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared Spain’s commitment to recognizing the Palestinian state, regardless of sufficient support within the European Union.

In Madrid, Sanchez reiterated that resolving conflicts between Israel and Hamas hinges on a two-state solution.

He emphasized the need to first recognize Palestine for Spain-led international peace conference initiatives.

Sanchez encouraged the EU to adopt a uniform stance on Israeli attacks on Gaza, similar to its approach towards Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

He warned of Europe’s potential isolation in the international community if it remains silent on Israel’s human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank.

Since October 7, Israel has waged a destructive war on Gaza, resulting in 16,248 Palestinian fatalities, including 7,112 children and 4,885 women, and 43,616 injuries, with 7,600 missing, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office.

Notably, the Israeli government has issued travel warnings for its citizens heading to Western Europe and Australia, urging them to exercise caution and avoid displaying their identities amid escalating tensions during the conflict period.

According to Bloomberg, the extended travel alerts cover the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Australia, with the threat level raised from 1 to 2.

Israel has advised travelers to these destinations to steer clear of large gatherings, including pro-Palestinian marches and other events that may pose risks to Israelis.

The government’s concern stems from Iran’s alleged intentions to target Israeli nationals abroad, including Jewish sites.
