Oil giant Shell has suspended all shipments through the Red Sea indefinitely, after US and British strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen raised concerns of further escalation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Attacks by the Houthis on ships have disrupted global trade. The movement says it is acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.

The newspaper added that the company took the step last week to halt all transit operations out of concern that a successful attack could cause a major oil spill in the region, as well as the risks to the safety of ship crews.

BP, another major oil company, said it was reviewing its operations in the Red Sea.
