Serbia Warns Ukraine Over Potential Recognition of Kosovo

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, cautioned Ukraine against recognizing Kosovo’s independence, suggesting that such a move could have significant repercussions.

In a recent joint press conference with his Prime Minister, Ana Brnabić, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić made a bold statement regarding Ukraine’s potential acknowledgment of Kosovo’s independence. He warned, “Should Kyiv recognize Kosovo’s independence, they stand to lose everything.”

Responding to journalists’ questions about Kyiv’s stance on Kosovo, Vučić remarked, “Imagine Ukraine, a friend of ours with whom we’ve never had conflicts or issues. I hope we never will. But should Ukraine one day recognize Kosovo, they will lose all their political trust and credibility. They’ll lose everything.”

Vučić further stressed, “After such a move, how can they claim adherence to international law? Impossible. I’m convinced [Ukrainian President] Zelensky won’t let go of this winning card.”

Back in February 2008, the Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija, which enjoyed a level of autonomy, unilaterally declared its independence. Since then, Kosovo has been keen on joining international organizations, including UNESCO and Interpol, especially in recent years.

It’s noteworthy that Kosovo’s recognition is a divisive issue internationally. Over 60 countries, including powerhouses like Russia, India, and China, and five EU member states, oppose the recognition of Kosovo.
