Saudi Arabia has announced its commitment to allocate $40 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) confirmed this decision, aiming to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

In a statement, KSrelief emphasized the Kingdom’s dedication to funding UNRWA’s crucial operations in Gaza, providing essential assistance to those in need.

The additional financial support is expected to facilitate the provision of food aid to more than 250,000 individuals and shelter assistance to approximately 200,000 people.

UNRWA serves as the primary humanitarian agency in the Gaza Strip, supporting over 2 million individuals who rely on its assistance for their survival.

However, in January, Israel shared information with UNRWA regarding alleged involvement of some staff members in activities linked to Palestinian movement Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023.

Following this development, several countries, including the United States, Finland, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom, temporarily suspended their funding for UNRWA.

Notably, Canada, Sweden, and Australia have since lifted their suspensions, reinstating their support for UNRWA after a hiatus of more than two months.
