In a significant move, Saudi Arabia, currently presiding over the Islamic Summit and the executive committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has summoned an extraordinary, urgent ministerial-level meeting of the executive committee to address the escalating military tensions in and around Gaza, which pose a threat to civilians and the stability of the region.
The OIC’s General Secretariat reiterated its condemnation of the Israeli military aggression, which has resulted in hundreds of Palestinian casualties, including deaths and injuries.
The organization emphasized that the ongoing Israeli occupation, non-compliance with international legal decisions, and the intensification of assaults and daily crimes against the Palestinian people, their land, and holy sites, stripping them of their legitimate rights, are the primary causes of instability in the region.
The OIC holds the Israeli occupation responsible for the escalation and calls on the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to assume its responsibilities regarding halting Israeli aggression and providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
The organization also advocates for a serious political process to end the Israeli occupation, establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the pre-1967 borders, and achieve a just and comprehensive peace in accordance with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
This urgent call by Saudi Arabia underscores the critical situation in Gaza and reflects a broader concern about regional stability. The upcoming meeting is expected to address these issues head-on and seek effective solutions to mitigate the crisis and pave the way for a lasting peace in the region.
