Microsoft has confirmed that it has been the target of a cyberattack that resulted in the breach of email accounts of some of its employees.
The company said in a blog post that its security team discovered the attack on January 12, 2024. The attack was carried out by a group called Midnight Blue, which Microsoft said is a Russian state-sponsored hacking group.
The hackers were able to access a “very limited number” of employee email accounts, including those of senior executives and employees in cybersecurity roles. Some documents were also obtained during the attack.
Microsoft said it is still investigating the incident and that there is no evidence that the hackers gained access to customer services, source code, or artificial intelligence systems.
Russia has repeatedly denied allegations that it is involved in cyberattacks.
