In a significant development, the Russian defense ministry announced on Sunday that it successfully thwarted a Ukrainian attack on Russian regions, involving a coordinated effort with at least 24 drones and two missiles.
According to the ministry, Ukrainian drones were intercepted and shot down over various locations, including Moscow, Tula, Kaluga, Smolensk, and Bryansk. Additionally, Russian air defenses successfully neutralized two Ukrainian S-200 surface-to-air missiles that had been modified for land target attacks. The missiles were intercepted over the Sea of Azov, as reported by the ministry.
The consequences of the attack were not without impact, with one person reported injured in Tula when an intercepted drone struck an apartment building, according to Alexei Dyumin, the governor of the region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the attempted mass drone attack, stating that Ukrainian drones were shot down in multiple areas of the Moscow region. The repercussions of the attack extended to Moscow’s main airports, causing delays and cancellations, as reported by the Kommersant newspaper.
Ukraine, in response, claimed on Saturday that Kyiv experienced Russia’s largest drone attack of the ongoing conflict. Furthermore, a Russian-installed official in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian region of Donetsk reported that Ukrainian forces targeted the energy system, resulting in some residents being left without heat or power. The situation underscores the escalating technological warfare between the two nations and the increasing complexity of the conflict.
