Overnight, Russia initiated drone strikes on Kyiv and parts of southern Ukraine, resulting in at least one civilian injury and causing damage to a gas pipeline and several homes in Mykolaiv, a key port city, as reported by Ukrainian military officials on Sunday.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that its defensive measures successfully intercepted 40 of the 45 Shahed drones launched by Russia.
Serhiy Popko said the air raid alert in the capital city lasted nearly two hours but all incoming drones were neutralized before reaching Kyiv, resulting in no reported casualties or property damage in the area. The all-clear for Kyiv was issued just before 4 a.m. local time.
The military command in the south of Ukraine stated that their air defenses were active for over five hours, successfully taking down 26 Shahed drones launched by Russia, especially over the Mykolaiv region along the Black Sea coast.
The attacks in southern Ukraine led to at least one civilian getting wounded. The military noted that the enemy appeared to target coastal and agricultural infrastructure specifically.
Debris from a destroyed drone and the subsequent explosion caused harm to residential buildings and a gas pipeline in Mykolaiv.
Additionally, four drones were shot down over the Odesa port on the Black Sea. These incidents have not been independently verified by Reuters.
Both nations have escalated their aerial assaults beyond the immediate battle zones in recent times, focusing on vital energy, military, and transportation infrastructure.
