Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that the US-UK operation in Yemen has caused an escalation of the conflict and had negative consequences for civilian maritime navigation.

Lavrov made the remarks at a joint press conference with Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Obeid bin Daغر, who is visiting Russia.

“We stand in solidarity with the Yemeni people in ensuring maritime navigation in the Red Sea,” Lavrov said through an interpreter, as quoted by Sputnik.

For his part, the Yemeni prime minister said that the Houthi group is the main cause of the “militarization” of the Red Sea, adding that peace negotiations have been stalled due to the Houthi escalation in the Red Sea region.

Bin Daغر expressed his belief that the Houthi operations in the Red Sea are not a product of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Several ships in the Red Sea have been attacked by the Houthi group, which says the attacks are in response to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

The United States and Britain have carried out repeated airstrikes on Houthi targets in an effort to disrupt and weaken the group’s ability to endanger freedom of navigation and threaten global trade.
