Russia has requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council on Friday in response to the recent airstrikes by the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen, as reported by “Cairo News Channel.”
The Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, through its “Telegram” channel, announced that “Russia has called for an urgent Security Council meeting on January 12 regarding the American and British strikes in Yemen.”
The U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, confirmed that American and British air forces carried out raids targeting Houthi militia sites in Yemen. This action was in retaliation for the group’s attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
“Cairo News Channel,” citing Houthi media sources, reported that Houthi elements are in a state of high alert and preparedness, vowing a strong response to any aggression.
Notably, Washington D.C. witnessed protests in front of the White House on Friday, organized by demonstrators opposing the recent American military strikes on several locations in Yemen.
American media sources reported that the protesters demanded an end to the U.S.-led bombings in Yemen, chanting “Hands off Yemen.” Videos circulating online showed the demonstrators also voicing support for Palestinian liberation and waving Palestinian flags.
Media outlets speculate that the protest may have been organized by the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), an anti-war and social justice alliance with organizational hubs across the United States.
The protest follows a joint military operation launched by the United States and Britain early Friday morning, targeting various locations in Yemen. This operation aims to weaken the ongoing Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
