Resistance committees in Wad Madani, Sudan, reported that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stormed the village of “Adnab” in the rural Serhan area of Gezira State with large military convoys for looting and repression.
The Sudanese Scene website quoted the resistance as saying that “the villagers resisted the RSF using bladed weapons to defend their land and honour,” noting that the attack resulted in civilian casualties.
This incident occurred despite the earlier expression of support by the commander of the Sudanese RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), for ceasefire talks in Sudan next month.
In a post on the social media site “X,” Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo welcomed an invitation by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the negotiations.
Dagalo wrote: “We announce our participation in the upcoming ceasefire talks on August 14, 2024, in Switzerland. I appreciate the efforts by the United States, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland in organizing these crucial deliberations.”
He added, “We share with the international community the goal of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire throughout the country, facilitating humanitarian access for all in need, and developing a robust monitoring and verification mechanism to ensure the implementation of any agreement reached.”
Dagalo continued: “The scale of suffering and destruction in our country is immense, and we reaffirm our steadfast position, as stated in today’s declaration by the U.S. Secretary of State, committed to saving lives, stopping the fighting, and paving the way for a negotiated political solution that restores civilian rule and the path to democratic transformation.”
The ongoing conflicts between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in mid-April 2023, have resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 10 million people, including two million who have fled across borders, according to the UN.
