Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the acting Russian representative following the discovery of parts from a Russian drone within its borders, according to a Reuters report.

The Romanian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that new fragments from a drone similar to those utilized by the Russian military were found on Romanian land. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis described this incident as an unacceptable breach of Romanian airspace.

In an official statement, Iohannis revealed that he had informed NATO’s Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, about the drone fragments. Stoltenberg, in turn, reaffirmed NATO’s full solidarity with Romania.

This incident marks the second time a drone has fallen and crashed on Romanian territory.

Local Romanian media outlets have reported an agreement between the U.S. and Romanian foreign ministries. This agreement will see the United States deploy F-16 fighter jets in Romania “to address NATO’s aerial security needs.”

“Radio Romania International” highlighted discussions on the drone wreckage during a phone conversation between Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu and her U.S. counterpart, Antony Blinken. The discussions focused on bolstering bilateral air defense cooperation and the deployment of several American F-16 fighters on Romanian soil to support NATO’s aerial security missions.
