Mayor of the Ceatalchioi community in Romania Tudor Chernega and Romania’s Defense Minister regarding discussed the potential evacuation of Plauru village due to frequent Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine‘s Izmail.

This report comes from the Romanian news outlet Digi24 on 7 September. Plauru is located just 300 meters from the port of Izmail.

Chernega has made an appeal to the authorities, seeking support for the residents of Plauru. These residents have been reporting ongoing incidents for more than a month, where Russian drones targeting the port of Izmail have been flying over their homes, and some have even fallen perilously close to their town.

The report highlights that not all residents of the village are willing to leave the place where they were born. During his meeting with the Defense Minister, the mayor proposed the idea of a voluntary evacuation for the residents of the region.

“I need to get in touch with the local residents, and those who want to voluntarily relocate should be provided with the same conditions as Ukrainians — namely accommodation and food,” said Chernega.

On 6 September, Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar acknowledged for the first time that parts of a Russian drone used to attack Ukraine fell on his country’s territory.

This followed Russia’s drone attack against targets in Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast, which borders Romania.

The Romanian side initially “categorically denied” reports about the fall of debris on its soil. According to the ministry, Russian attacks on Ukraine “never posed direct military threats to the national territory or the territorial waters of Romania.”
