The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named Rabat the World Book Capital for 2026.
The announcement, made on Thursday by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, followed the recommendation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.
“Rabat is an important cultural hub where literature plays a key role in transmitting knowledge and the arts in all their diversity,” Azoulay stated in the press release. The flourishing book industry in Rabat, with 54 publishing houses and the 3rd largest book fair in Africa, is a significant force in the city’s creative economy and education sector.
UNESCO recognized Rabat for its strong commitment to literature, empowering women and youth through reading, and addressing illiteracy, particularly in disadvantaged communities. As the 2026 World Book Capital, Rabat will implement initiatives to enhance book access, support local publishing, and strengthen literacy programs citywide, contributing to sustainable economic growth and social progress.
The celebration year will begin on April 23, 2026, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
