North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced that his country is advancing its nuclear power policy to significantly increase its nuclear weapons stockpile, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday.
In a speech marking the anniversary of North Korea’s founding on Monday night, Kim stated that North Korea must enhance its nuclear capabilities to be fully prepared to deploy them at any moment to secure the state’s security rights.
Kim emphasized the necessity of a strong military presence to counteract the various threats posed by the United States and its allies.
He described North Korea as facing a “serious threat” from what he termed a nuclear military alliance led by the United States in the region.
This announcement coincides with a scheduled meeting on Tuesday by the South Korean Ministry of Defense with member countries of the United Nations Command overseeing the Korean Peninsula.
Last month, Germany became the latest country to join the United Nations Command in South Korea, which monitors the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has pledged to defend the South in the event of war.
North Korea has criticized the United Nations Command as an “illegitimate war organization” and described Germany‘s joining of the Washington-led border monitoring force as exacerbating tensions.
