Niger’s military junta has taken the decision to close the country’s airspace as tensions escalate following the military takeover and ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum.
The closure comes in response to a threat from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which had demanded the immediate reinstatement of President Bazoum or face military intervention.
The deadline set by ECOWAS has passed, and the junta’s move to close the airspace is seen as a response to the bloc’s ultimatum.
The junta has warned against any violation of the airspace, stating that it will be met with an immediate and vigorous response.
It has also expressed concerns about potential foreign intervention, accusing unnamed Central African countries of pre-deployment preparations.
The situation remains tense, with the risk of further escalation if a resolution is not reached.
