Algeria declared on Monday that Niger has accepted its mediation efforts to resolve the political crisis in the country, which witnessed a military coup in July of last year.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating that they received an official letter from the Nigerien Foreign Ministry confirming the acceptance of Algeria’s mediation aimed at finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in this neighboring country. This initiative was put forth by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry further stated, “This acceptance of the Algerian initiative strengthens the option of a political solution to the crisis in Niger and opens the way to providing the necessary conditions that would facilitate the resolution of this crisis through peaceful means, preserving the interests of Niger and the entire region.”
The statement continued, “Following the acknowledgment of this acceptance, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has tasked Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf with traveling to Niamey as soon as possible to initiate preparatory discussions with all concerned parties regarding the activation of the Algerian initiative.”
Algeria shares a long border with Niger and has proposed an initiative that includes a 6-month transitional period led by a civilian figure.
On July 26 of last year, Niger experienced a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
Since then, there have been international calls for the release of Bazoum and the restoration of the situation to its previous state, while the ruling military council has remained firm in its position.
