In a significant move towards green energy, the Moroccan government announced on Monday its decision to allocate about 1 million hectares of public land for green hydrogen projects.

This initiative highlights Morocco’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in the global energy transition and reshaping the resulting energy flows.

The government plans to make 300,000 hectares available to investors in the initial phase, demonstrating its dedication to fostering investment in sustainable energy solutions.

The Prime Minister’s office stated that this initiative would position Morocco as a key player in the global shift towards renewable energy.

Morocco’s approach to green hydrogen projects is comprehensive, covering the entire spectrum from renewable energy generation and electrolysis to the conversion of green hydrogen into ammonia, methanol, and synthetic fuels.

This holistic strategy underscores the country’s ambition to integrate green hydrogen into its broader energy strategy effectively.

Furthermore, the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water in Morocco has recently signed an agreement with renewable energy companies Nariva and GE Vernova to conduct a feasibility study on replacing fuel with green hydrogen for a 99-megawatt power station in Laayoune.

This collaboration aims to transition the Laayoune power station to 100% green hydrogen electricity, generated by Nariva’s wind farm, supporting Morocco’s goal to increase its renewable energy share from the current 40% to 52% by 2030.

This ambitious plan not only positions Morocco as a leader in green hydrogen production but also contributes significantly to global efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainable energy sources.
