Mali’s Military Council Postpones Elections

The political landscape of Mali faces another significant shift as its ruling Military Council recently announced the postponement of the country’s scheduled elections. These elections, which were originally set for February 2024, are now on hold due to various technical reasons, including a disagreement with a French company, Idemia.

The upcoming elections were anticipated to mark the end of the transitional phase that Mali entered following the 2020 coup. The decision to push back the elections means that this transitional period, which many hoped would stabilize the nation’s political arena, will continue for an undefined duration.

Colonel Abdallah Maiga, the spokesperson for the government, addressed the media in Bamako, explaining that the decision to postpone the elections initially planned for 4th and 18th February 2024 was taken due to “technical reasons.”

The military authorities elaborated on these reasons, highlighting the delay in the adoption of a new constitution in 2023 and the review of the electoral list as significant contributing factors.

A notable element in this decision was a disagreement with the French company “Idemia.” According to Malian authorities, this company was involved in the census process. The specifics of the dispute were not detailed, but its mention underscores the challenges of external partnerships in the election preparations.

The Malian government’s statement did not provide a new date for the presidential elections. However, Colonel Maiga promised to share more details in an upcoming announcement.

This decision, coupled with the underlying reasons, underscores the complexities Mali faces in its journey to political stability. With external factors like international partnerships playing a role in internal affairs, the future of Mali’s political trajectory remains a topic of interest for observers and stakeholders alike.
