Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, has welcomed the recent convening of the State Council and the election of its presidency, consisting of the first and second deputies.
This development was shared in a statement released on the Libyan House of Representatives’ official Facebook page.
Saleh expressed optimism that the State Council’s assembly would elevate national interest through consensus with the House of Representatives.
The Libyan official urged Khaled Al-Mishri, the head of the State Council, to work towards resolutions and agreements that could unravel the ongoing Libyan crisis, paving the way for electoral duties and national stability.
Earlier on Wednesday, the High State Council held a session attended by 77 members under the chairmanship of the oldest member, Abdeljalil Al-Zahi, with Hanaa Al-Arfi acting as the secretary.
The session, which also saw the participation of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as observers, elected Naji Mukhtar as the first deputy and Omar Khaled Al-Obaidi as the second deputy of the council. The secretary will be elected in a subsequent session.
However, the session faced criticism from the outgoing president of the High State Council, Mohamed Tekala, who denounced the meeting as a “blatant violation of the internal regulations of the council in both form and substance,” highlighting a serious overstep of the powers stipulated in the internal regulations.
