German authorities detained a Libyan man suspected of affiliating with ISIS and plotting an attack on the Israeli Embassy in Germany, according to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The man was reportedly planning to target the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, as detailed by Bild newspaper.

An Israeli Embassy spokesperson in Berlin confirmed the existence of a plot against the diplomatic mission.

Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor expressed gratitude towards the German security forces for “ensuring the security of our embassy.”

Elite police units, heavily armed, raided the suspect’s apartment in Bernau, a suburb of Berlin.

Additional raids were conducted in an apartment in Sankt Augustin, a city in western Germany, connected to the case, where potential witnesses were interrogated, and evidence was secured, Bild reported.

The German authorities were reportedly acting on intelligence received from an unspecified foreign intelligence agency.

The spokesperson for the German Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the residents of the Sankt Augustin apartment are not suspected of committing any crime.

The details of the alleged plot remain unclear, including whether the man had acquired weapons or how he intended to carry out the attack.

The detained suspect is expected to appear before an investigating judge at the German court in Karlsruhe today, Sunday.

The judge will then decide whether he should be held during the investigation.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked a war in the Gaza Strip, German authorities have heightened their vigilance against extremist threats and rising anti-Semitism.

Joyce Msuya, the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, stated that Palestinians, particularly in northern Gaza, are enduring indescribable suffering under the siege imposed by Israeli forces.

In her statement, Msuya emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, the wounded, healthcare workers, and medical facilities under international humanitarian law.
