The United Nations Special Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, met on Monday with the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi, at the council’s headquarters in the capital, Tripoli. Through his X account, the Special Envoy stated that Al-Mnifi briefed him on the results of the meeting held in Cairo the previous day with the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aqeela Saleh, and the Head of the Libyan High Council of State, Mohamed Takala, under the auspices of the Arab League.

Bathily expressed his gratitude to Al-Mnifi and took note of the official statement issued after the meeting, and they agreed to follow up on the outcomes derived from the meeting.

The Arab League had issued a statement announcing the results of the tripartite Cairo meeting among the heads, Al-Mnifi, Saleh, and Takala. The statement highlighted that an agreement was reached on the necessity to form a unified government to lead Libya to elections and provide essential services to the citizens, along with consensus on Libya’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rejection of any foreign interference in its affairs.

The attendees emphasized the formation of a technical committee within a specific timeframe, based on the political agreement and its annexes, to consider appropriate amendments to expand the consensus base and accept the work done by the (6+6) committee, resolving outstanding issues regarding points of contention according to existing legislation.

Furthermore, there was an agreement on unifying sovereign positions to ensure their effective role at the state level, and a call was made to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the international community to support this consensus to ensure its success.

The participants agreed to urgently convene a second round to finalize this agreement and implement it.
